How to Turn Lecture Slides Into an Exam Revision Sheet
A revision sheet should not be a smaller copy of your slide deck. Its job is to help you retrieve, connect, and apply the ideas that the exam may require. If you simply shrink eighty slides into two pages, you preserve the lecturer's presentation order but not necessarily a useful study structure.
This workflow turns one permitted lecture deck into a checked revision sheet with six fields: concept, meaning, relationship, example, boundary, and retrieval prompt.
Decide what the sheet must help you do
Start with the assessment format and course learning objectives. A revision sheet for problem solving needs conditions, formulas, units, and worked choices. A sheet for essays needs arguments, evidence, comparisons, and limitations. A sheet for short answers needs accurate definitions plus examples and distinctions.
Do not assume every slide deserves equal space. Mark each topic as:
- Core: directly tied to an objective, repeated across classes, or necessary for later ideas.
- Support: evidence, example, or method that explains a core idea.
- Context: background that helps orientation but is not yet an assessment priority.
- Gap: information the slides do not contain clearly enough to study.
Keep gaps visible rather than letting an AI tool fill them with plausible background.
Build the six-field revision table
Use one row per examinable concept:

The fields force different kinds of understanding:
- Concept: the exact course term.
- Meaning: a concise explanation, not copied slide text.
- Relationship: how it causes, contrasts with, depends on, or forms part of another idea.
- Checked example: one course-supported application.
- Boundary: when the rule changes, fails, or does not apply.
- Retrieval prompt: a question you can answer with the sheet hidden.
Step 1: map the deck without summarizing it
Scan the title, stated objectives, section headings, repeated terms, diagrams, formulas, examples, and final summary. Group slides by concept rather than preserving one row per slide.

Step 4: choose an example you can verify
Use an example from the lecturer, tutorial, assigned reading, or a problem set. Do not let a generated example silently become course evidence.
Record enough information to check it:
- slide or page location;
- input or scenario;

- result;

Notice the boundary: the row does not claim that any real study used random sampling or assignment.
Step 5: convert headings into retrieval prompts
The University of Rochester's spaced retrieval practice guide recommends turning textbook or PowerPoint headings into questions and answering without looking. UC San Diego's retrieval practice guide likewise advises recalling information first, then checking the course material and correcting gaps.
Write prompts that match the thinking your exam requires:
- Define: What does this term mean under the course definition?
- Distinguish: How is A different from B?
- Explain: Why does A lead to B?
- Apply: Which concept fits this new scenario, and why?
- Evaluate: What evidence supports the conclusion, and what limits it?
- Reconstruct: Draw the process and label each stage from memory.
Keep the answer off the question side. A question that displays its answer only tests recognition.
Step 6: compress only after checking
Once the rows are accurate, compress the sheet:
- remove duplicate definitions;
- replace repeated prose with a relationship map;
- keep only one strong example per concept;
- use abbreviations only when you can expand them;
- preserve conditions, units, and source locations;
- move unresolved gaps to a follow-up list.
Do not reduce font size until the page is unreadable. If the sheet is still too long, narrow the scope by unit or objective.
A two-page layout
Page 1: course map
- unit question;
- five to eight core concepts;
- relationship diagram;
- key conditions and common confusions;
- unresolved questions.
Page 2: retrieval grid
- short-answer prompts;
- one application problem;
- one comparison;
- one diagram to recreate;
- an error log showing what you missed last time.
If your exam rules allow a reference sheet, follow the instructor's format and content restrictions. If not, use this sheet only for study.
Use AI inside a bounded workflow
If permitted, ask an AI tool to organize only the supplied material:
Group the readable slide content by concept. For each concept, list the exact slide numbers and draft fields for meaning, relationship, example, and boundary. Mark any field not supported by the deck as “missing course context.” Do not invent examples or fill missing explanations.
Then rewrite meanings from memory, check every row, and create your own retrieval prompts. The prompt can reduce sorting work; it cannot decide what your lecturer intended when the deck is incomplete.

How many concepts should one revision sheet contain?
Enough to cover one coherent lecture or unit without shrinking the page into unreadable text. Split the sheet when concepts no longer fit a useful relationship map.
Should I include every example from the slides?
No. Keep one checked example that shows how each important concept works, plus a new practice case if your exam requires application.
Can I use the sheet as an exam cheat sheet?
Only if your instructor explicitly permits a reference sheet and you follow the stated rules. Otherwise use it for preparation.
What if the slides have almost no text?
