GPA is calculated with a simple weighted average: GPA equals total quality points divided by total credits. Quality points are your grade points multiplied by the credit hours for each course.
For example, an A worth 4.0 in a 3-credit course gives you 12 quality points. A B worth 3.0 in a 4-credit course also gives you 12 quality points. Together, that is 24 quality points across 7 credits, which equals a 3.43 GPA.
Most GPA systems use the same weighted-average idea, but the grade points differ by country and university. For example, the US often uses a 4.0 scale, Australia may use WAM or a 7.0 GPA, Singapore uses NUS/NTU 5.0 CAP or SMU 4.3 GPA, and Korea commonly uses 4.5. Pass/fail courses usually count toward credits but do not add grade points, so this calculator lets you exclude them.
International GPA Scales Explained
| Scale | Region | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| US 4.0 | United States | 0.0 - 4.0 | Common college GPA scale. A/A+ often count as 4.0. |
| US 4.3 | Some US universities | 0.0 - 4.3 | A+ can count as 4.3. |
| Australian WAM | Australia | 0 - 100 | Weighted Average Mark based on percentage marks and credit points. |
| Australian 7.0 GPA | Australia | 0.0 - 7.0 | HD=7, D=6, Credit=5, Pass=4 is a common model. |
| Canada 4.0 / 4.33 | Canada | 0.0 - 4.0 or 4.33 | Canada varies by province and university, so check your transcript legend. |
| UK Percentage | United Kingdom | 0 - 100 | First=70+, 2:1=60-69, 2:2=50-59, Third=40-49. |
| Singapore 5.0 CAP / 4.3 GPA | Singapore | 0.0 - 5.0 or 4.3 | NUS/NTU commonly use 5.0 CAP; SMU commonly uses 4.3 GPA. |
| Japan 4.0 | Japan | 0.0 - 4.0 | Common S/A/B/C/F model; exact points vary by university. |
| Korea 4.5 / 4.3 | South Korea | 0.0 - 4.5 or 4.3 | 4.5 is common; some universities use 4.3 with plus/minus grades. |
Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA
Semester GPA measures your grades for one term. Cumulative GPA combines all completed terms into one credit-weighted average. Your cumulative GPA usually matters more for graduate school, honors, scholarships, academic standing, and graduation requirements.
A strong semester can raise your cumulative GPA, but the more credits you have completed, the harder it becomes to move the overall number. That is why goal planning is helpful.
What's a Good GPA or WAM?
| GPA | Meaning | Context |
|---|---|---|
| US/Canada 3.7+ | Excellent | Dean's List and top graduate school range. |
| Australia WAM 75+ / GPA 6+ | Strong | Often around distinction range, depending on the university. |
| UK 60+ | 2:1 or higher | Common threshold for graduate schemes and postgraduate study. |
| Singapore CAP 4.0+ | Good to excellent | Roughly B+ average or better on NUS/NTU-style CAP. |
| Korea 3.5+ / 4.5 | Solid | Generally around B+ average, but elite programs may expect higher. |
How to Raise Your GPA
Start by checking your school's retake policy. Some universities replace the old grade when you retake a course, while others average both attempts. Next, think carefully about credit load: a lighter semester with better grades can be more valuable than overloading and underperforming.
Study strategy matters too. Active recall, spaced repetition, practice quizzes, office hours, and study groups all help. Notoo supports this by turning lectures, PDFs, and videos into notes, flashcards, quizzes, and mind maps, so your study time is spent actually learning.
FAQ
How do I calculate my GPA manually?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points. Add all quality points, then divide by total credit hours. For example, an A in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points, and a B in a 4-credit course gives 12 quality points. Total: 24 quality points divided by 7 credits equals a 3.43 GPA.
Does a GPA calculator account for pass/fail courses?
Pass/fail courses typically do not affect your GPA because they earn credits but no quality points. This calculator lets you exclude P/F courses. Check your university policy because some schools handle them differently.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
In college, GPA is normally credit-weighted, meaning a 4-credit course counts more than a 2-credit course. Weighted versus unweighted is mainly a high school concept for honors or AP classes.
Can one calculator be exact for every country?
No. GPA scales vary by country, university, faculty, and year. This calculator covers common student-facing scales, but official applications should use your university transcript legend or a credential evaluator.
Does Australia use WAM or GPA?
Both exist. Many Australian universities use WAM, which is a credit-weighted average of percentage marks. Some universities also report a 7.0 GPA where HD, Distinction, Credit, Pass, and Fail map to grade points.
Why are there two Canada and Singapore options?
Canada has multiple institutional scales, commonly including 4.0 and 4.33. Singapore also differs by university: NUS and NTU commonly use a 5.0 CAP scale, while SMU uses a 4.3-style GPA scale.
Can I plan what GPA I need to graduate with honors?
Yes. Use the Goal Planner tab. Enter your target GPA, current GPA, completed credits, and remaining credits. It will estimate the average GPA you need across your remaining courses.
