How to Read a Research Paper's Methods Section: A Study Template
A paper's abstract tells you what the authors want you to notice. Its methods section lets you trace how they produced the evidence. For a university seminar or exam, your goal is to explain the path from research question to data, and identify what you still need to understand.
This tutorial focuses on empirical papers. A theoretical article, historical argument or systematic review may need a different worksheet. Follow the structure of the assigned paper rather than forcing every field to fit.
Start with the question the method must answer
Read the research question in the introduction, then write it in one sentence. Add the course task: explain the design, critique a measure, interpret a result, or compare approaches. That task tells you where to spend attention.
Trent University's scientific-paper guide explains that methods cover study conduct, participants or materials, measurement and analysis. It also encourages readers to examine sampling and the strengths and weaknesses of the design.
Use those categories to navigate the section. You do not need to understand every technical term on the first pass, but you do need to keep unresolved terms visible.

Keep reported facts separate from your evaluation. “Participants were volunteers from one course” is a source fact if the paper says so. “This may not represent all students” is your interpretation and needs reasoning. “The study is useless” does not follow automatically from either statement.
Reconstruct the procedure as a sequence
Write a simple chain in your notes:
Recruit or select → assign or observe → measure → process → analyze.
Replace each label with the paper's actual step and add a source reference. If the method points to supplementary material, check whether you need it to explain the assigned task. If you cannot access it, write “procedure detail unavailable” rather than guessing.
For an unfamiliar analysis, record its name, what the authors say they used it for, and the specific question you will bring to class. Do not let an AI-generated explanation become the paper's own justification unless you can locate that justification in the text.
Teaching example: an association is not an intervention
The following study is fictional and created solely for this tutorial. It is not a real study or a recorded product result.
Mock source: “Volunteers in one introductory course reported their weekly independent-study hours. The researchers compared those reports with the volunteers' course quiz scores. Students were not assigned to study-hour groups.”
Methods note: The units are volunteers from one course. Study time is self-reported. The researchers measured study time and quiz scores without assigning study time.
Unsupported summary to reject: “The experiment proves that increasing study hours improves quiz scores.”
Safer interpretation: This design can examine an association in the sampled students. The mock passage does not establish that changing study time caused a score difference. It also gives no numerical result to report.
The distinction follows the BCcampus chapter on correlational research: measurement without manipulation leaves causal interpretation open to issues such as directionality and other variables. To practise, ask what would have to change in the design to investigate a causal question. Check your answer against your course's research-methods teaching.

Treat the prompt as a request, not a guarantee. Audit names, quantities, group assignments, time order and exclusions against the original. A table or flowchart embedded in a PDF may require direct visual reading.
Test your understanding without the worksheet
Close the paper and explain the procedure aloud. Then answer three questions:
- What data did the researchers collect, and from whom or what?
- How did the design connect those data to the question?
- What conclusion would go beyond what this method supports?
Reopen the paper and correct your explanation. When studying in a second language, retain the exact course term—such as sampling, assignment or coding—beside your plain-language explanation. Mark a language question separately from a design question so you can ask for the right help.
Keep neighboring reading tasks separate
This methods record is for one paper's evidence-producing process. Use the figures and tables guide to check what a particular display supports. Use the two-paper comparison template when your assignment requires comparison. An argument map is more useful for tracing claims and reasoning than for reconstructing an empirical procedure.

Should I memorize every detail in the methods section?
Match your effort to the course objective. Be able to explain the design and the details that matter to the assigned interpretation. Ask your instructor what technical depth is expected.
What if an important detail is missing?
Check the rest of the paper and any accessible supplement. If it remains missing, record the gap and narrow your interpretation. Do not fill it with a plausible procedure.
Can a PDF summary replace reading the methods?
Use it as a navigation aid. Before presenting a design or critiquing a measure, verify the relevant passage and keep your own evaluation distinct from the authors' report.
