How to Prepare for a Seminar Discussion With AI
A good seminar contribution is not a miniature presentation. It shows that you understood the assigned material, can point to evidence, and are ready to connect your idea with what other people say. AI can help you organize readings and rehearse questions, but it should not invent your position or replace the source.
For international students, preparation also reduces the language pressure of speaking in real time. You can pre-build a few accurate phrases, check the pronunciation of key terms, and decide which evidence you want to use. The goal is not to script every sentence. It is to arrive with enough structure to listen and respond.
Know what the seminar requires
Start with the course guide, discussion prompt, participation rubric, and assigned readings. Identify:
- the topic or case under discussion;
- the required sources;
- whether you are expected to lead, respond, debate, or ask questions;
- how evidence should be cited aloud;
- whether AI use is permitted for preparation;
- whether uploaded course material is confidential or restricted.
Oxford's guidance on making the most of seminars and classes emphasizes completing preparatory work, reflecting on readings, contributing ideas, listening to others, asking for clarification, and testing ideas. That is a useful definition of the task: preparation must support interaction, not just produce a private summary.
If your course prohibits uploading readings to third-party tools, do not do it. You can still use AI on your own outline or on material you are allowed to process. Keep any generated claims separate from verified notes until you have checked them.
Build a reading map before asking for questions
For each assigned source, write five items:
- the author's main claim;
- the evidence or method used;
- one important concept;
- one limitation, assumption, or unresolved issue;
- one connection to another reading or class topic.
This map is more valuable than a generic summary because it exposes the relationships a seminar can discuss. Ask AI to organize what the source says, not to tell you what your opinion should be. Useful prompts include:
- “Separate this author's claim, evidence, assumptions, and limitations.”
- “List points where Reading A and Reading B use the same term differently.”
- “Which statement in my notes lacks a page reference?”
- “Turn these verified notes into three discussion questions at different levels.”
Do not ask for “the smartest thing to say.” That produces polished language without giving you a reason to believe it.
Create a question ladder
Bring questions that can move the conversation rather than test whether classmates completed the reading.
Clarifying questions
Use these when a term, method, or step is genuinely unclear:
When the author uses X, does it include Y, or is the definition narrower?
Connecting questions
Link readings, lectures, cases, or prior weeks:
How does this explanation differ from the model we used last week?
Evaluating questions
Examine evidence or assumptions without turning disagreement into a personal attack:
What evidence would we need to distinguish between these two explanations?
Applying questions
Move a concept into a new case while preserving its conditions:

Cornell's guide to using effective questions recommends questions that ask learners to explain causes, compare cases, show reasoning, predict, and apply ideas. Use those verbs to audit AI-generated questions. Delete prompts that are answerable by copying one sentence or so broad that nobody knows where to begin.
Prepare three contribution cards
Instead of scripting a page, create three small cards. Each card has four lines:
- Claim: the point you can state in one sentence.
- Evidence: the reading, page, example, or data that supports it.
- Link: how it connects to the current question or another speaker.
- Invitation: a question that opens the point to the group.
Example structure:
I read the author's main distinction as ____. The example on page ____ supports that because ____. This connects with the earlier point about ____. Would the distinction still hold when ____?
One card can support agreement, one can support a respectful challenge, and one can ask for clarification. You may use none of them exactly as written. Their purpose is to reduce the load of forming evidence, language, and structure at the same time.
Cornell's discussion guidance notes that sharing prompts in advance gives students time to think and that written questions can add structure. Use AI for rehearsal, not impersonation
Give the AI your verified reading map and ask it to challenge one contribution at a time. For example:
Act as a seminar peer. Ask one concise follow-up question about the evidence for this claim. Do not add facts that are not in my notes.
Answer aloud without reading your card. Then check:
- Did you state a clear point before adding detail?
- Did you name the source accurately?
- Did you distinguish the author's view from your own?
- Did you answer the question actually asked?
- Did you leave room for another person to respond?
Ask for a shorter version if your answer is difficult to say. Shorter does not mean less academic. A focused claim plus evidence is often easier for listeners to follow than a dense paragraph.
The University of Edinburgh's Seminar Discussion Skills course focuses on asking focused questions, referring to sources, structuring contributions, and maintaining cohesion. Those are good rehearsal criteria for any student, especially when academic English is an additional language.
Build a small language toolkit
Prepare adaptable phrases, not a complete script.
To enter the discussion:
- “I would like to connect that point to...”
- “One example in the reading is...”
- “I understood the author's claim slightly differently...”
To ask for time or clarification:
- “Could you clarify what you mean by...?”
- “Let me check that I understood the distinction.”
- “I need a moment to connect that to the reading.”
To disagree with evidence:
- “I see the argument, but I am not sure the evidence establishes...”
- “Would that interpretation change if we consider...?”
- “The second reading seems to challenge that assumption because...”
To invite others:
- “Does anyone read the example differently?”
- “How would this apply in another context?”
Check that the phrase sounds natural to you. Replace words you would not normally use. Pronounce names and technical terms before class, and keep the relevant page numbers visible.
During the seminar: listen for a link
Do not spend the whole discussion waiting to deliver a prepared card. Write three short columns: point, evidence, and connection. When someone speaks, capture only enough to respond accurately.
A contribution can do one of four useful things:
- extend a point with new evidence;
- distinguish two ideas that are being merged;
- ask for the reason behind a claim;
- summarize where the group agrees and what remains unresolved.
Refer to the previous speaker's idea before introducing yours. This shows listening and makes a prepared point feel like part of the discussion rather than a speech dropped into it.
If the conversation moves away from your prepared material, use a clarification question. Participation is not measured only by how many facts you recite. A precise question can help the group identify an assumption or return to the source.
After class: convert discussion into review
Within a short review session, add:
- one idea that changed or became more precise;
- one question the group could not resolve;
- one source or page to revisit;
- one term or phrase you want to use more confidently;
- one contribution you would make differently next time.

A 30-minute preparation plan
Minutes 0–10: verify the reading map
Review the prompt and identify the claim, evidence, limitation, and connection for each core source.
Minutes 10–18: draft questions
Create one clarifying, one connecting, and one evaluating or applying question. Check that each can be answered from shared course material.
Minutes 18–25: build contribution cards
Write three claim-evidence-link-invitation cards. Add page references.
Minutes 25–30: rehearse aloud
Answer one likely follow-up. Shorten complex sentences and practise key names or terms. Stop before rehearsal becomes memorization.
If you have more time, spend it reading the difficult source passage, not generating more polished questions.

Can AI summarize all the readings for me?
It can help organize permitted material, but you still need to check the source and understand the evidence. A seminar requires you to respond to interpretations, not merely repeat a summary.
Is it acceptable to use AI for seminar preparation?
Follow the course and university rules. Do not upload restricted material, and do not present generated ideas or wording as independent work when disclosure is required.
What if I am nervous about speaking English?
Prepare a few evidence-based contribution cards and clarification phrases, rehearse them aloud, and aim for one clear connection rather than a long speech. Use university language-support services when available.
How many questions should I bring?
Three different question types are usually more useful than a long list of similar prompts. Quality and relevance matter more than count.
What if someone makes my point first?
Build on it, add evidence, qualify it, or ask a follow-up. Seminar participation is collaborative; you do not lose the opportunity because another student began the idea.
