An AI study guide from a PDF should do more than shorten the document. A useful guide tells you what the material is about, which ideas deserve attention, how those ideas connect, and what you can actually recall without looking.

What an exam-ready study guide should contain

Open the file and inspect it manually. Confirm that the pages are readable, in order, and actually relevant. Text-based PDFs normally produce clearer extraction than blurry scans. Tables, equations, footnotes, diagrams, and multi-column pages deserve extra attention because their meaning may not survive plain-text extraction.

For each section, try to reduce the output to one central idea and a small set of supporting details. Preserve qualifications such as “under these conditions,” “in this sample,” or “except when.” Those details are often what an exam question tests.

Step 4: run a source-verification pass

Verification is where the guide becomes dependable. Work section by section with the PDF open.

Check these high-risk elements first:

  • Proper nouns, dates, statistics, citations, and quoted definitions.
  • Equations, variables, signs, units, and ordered steps.
  • The direction of a relationship, such as increase versus decrease.
  • Exceptions, limitations, and boundary conditions.

Step 6: take a closed-book baseline

Close the PDF and the guide. Answer a small set of questions under conditions that resemble the assessment. Mark each answer using the verified source, not the AI's confidence.

Cornell's guidance on using practice exams recommends matching the real test's timing and allowed resources. It also suggests using one practice test early as a baseline and another after studying when multiple tests are available.

Record misses by concept, not just by score. “I missed question 7” tells you little. “I can state the formula but cannot choose when to apply it” gives you a next action.

Step 7: schedule preparation and review separately

Preparing a study guide and reviewing it are different tasks. The Cornell five-day study plan separates preparation—identifying, organizing, and consolidating material—from active review such as self-quizzing and practice exams.

Advice for international students

Keep important course terms in the language of instruction, even if you add a brief translation. Write one plain-English explanation and one discipline-specific example. Then practise producing the English term from the meaning, not only recognizing the meaning from the term.
