How to Fact-Check AI Study Notes Before an Exam

AI study notes can be clear, organized, and wrong at the same time. A fluent explanation may omit an exception, reverse a relationship, attach a real statistic to the wrong context, or invent a citation that looks convincing. The risk is highest when you are new to the topic, because you do not yet know which sentence deserves suspicion.

Know what needs checking first

Not every sentence has the same consequence. Begin with claims that are both important and easy to distort:

  • citations and references;
  • exceptions and limitations;

Possible statuses are confirmed, incomplete, contradicted, untraceable, and not applicable. “Incomplete” is important: a sentence may be broadly right but unusable on an exam because it omits the condition that earns the mark.

Step 3: check the source, not another AI answer

Asking the same model “Are you sure?” can produce another confident response without new evidence. Go to the source expected by your course:

  1. lecturer-provided slides, notes, and recordings;
  2. the assigned textbook or paper;
  3. the course glossary, lab manual, or formula sheet;
  4. an official or peer-reviewed source recommended for the discipline;
  5. the lecturer, tutor, librarian, or teaching assistant when ambiguity remains.

Step 4: verify citations line by line

A citation has two separate questions: does the source exist, and does it support the claim?

Search the exact title, author, journal, and year in your library catalog, a discipline database, or the publisher's site. Open the source. Confirm the bibliographic details, then find the relevant passage. A real paper can still be misquoted or attached to a claim it does not make.

Reject a citation when you cannot locate it after reasonable searching. Do not repair it by choosing the first paper with a similar title. If a note paraphrases the course textbook, cite the textbook itself according to the assignment rules rather than citing the AI tool as a knowledge source.

For quotations, compare every word and preserve the page number. For statistics, verify the population, timeframe, unit, denominator, and whether the number is observed, estimated, or projected.

Step 5: check meaning, not just matching words

Keyword overlap can hide a conceptual error. Compare the generated claim with the source's logic:

  • Does “associated with” become “causes”?
  • Does “may” become “will”?
  • Does a result for one population become a universal rule?
  • Does a model assumption disappear?
  • Does an example become a definition?
  • Does a minority interpretation become the consensus?
  • Does a historical policy become the current rule?

Write the corrected note in your own words and include the condition or limitation. If you cannot explain why the correction matters, you have found a topic for deeper study.

Step 6: inspect tables, diagrams, and formulas manually

Generated notes can lose visual relationships. Check axis labels, legends, arrows, footnotes, negative signs, superscripts, units, and the order of process steps. A correct label placed on the wrong branch is still wrong.

For each formula, answer:

  1. What does every symbol mean?
  2. Which units are expected?
  3. Under what assumptions does it apply?
  4. What happens in a simple boundary case?
  5. Does the worked example reproduce the source result?

For a diagram, cover the labels and reconstruct it. Then compare orientation, direction, and relationships with the source. If the material is image-heavy or scanned, expect to do more manual checking.

Step 7: run a contradiction pass

Compare the AI notes with three anchors: the learning outcomes, your own lecture notes, and the assigned source. Mark disagreements instead of choosing whichever wording is easier.

Some disagreements are legitimate. A lecturer may use a simplified first-year model while a research paper discusses exceptions. Two authors may define the same term differently. Preserve the context: “For this course,” “In Author A's framework,” or “Under these assumptions.”

  • Minutes 0–3: mark formulas, numbers, citations, definitions, and high-stakes claims.
  • Minutes 3–8: trace those claims to pages, slides, or timestamps.
