How to Combine Lecture Slides and Textbook Notes

Lecture slides and a textbook chapter rarely do the same job. Slides show the lecturer's sequence, emphasis, and selected examples. The reading usually supplies definitions, evidence, and detail. If you summarize each source into a separate pile, you still have to solve the hard problem later: deciding how the ideas fit together.

A better method is to build one source bridge organized by topic. Keep the two sources visible, record what each contributes, and turn disagreements or missing links into questions rather than smoothing them over.

Use a source-bridge table

The relationship column prevents accidental merging. Two sources may use different examples while making the same point. A reading may qualify a simplified slide. The lecture may emphasize one part of a chapter because it is more relevant to the assessment.

Cornell University's concept-mapping guidance recommends naming the linking terms between ideas. The same principle applies here: write supports, adds an exception, gives an example, or uses a narrower definition instead of drawing an unexplained line.

Step 1: start from the course objective

Before making notes, identify the task you are preparing for. Use a learning objective, tutorial question, assignment brief, or past exam topic. A broad heading such as “Week 4” is not enough. A useful target is specific:

  • explain a mechanism;
  • compare two theories;
  • solve a problem under stated conditions;
  • interpret evidence;
  • apply a rule to a new case.

This target determines what belongs in the source bridge. It also stops a long chapter from dominating simply because it contains more words.

Step 2: map the lecture first

Use the deck as the course-shaped outline. Record section headings, learning objectives, repeated terms, worked examples, diagrams, and any assessment cues from your own class notes. Add slide numbers.

Step 3: read the textbook selectively

Now scan the assigned section for the topics already in your lecture map. For each topic, collect only what the reading adds:

  • a precise definition;
  • a reason or mechanism;
  • evidence or a source;
  • a worked example;
  • a limitation or exception;
  • a connection to another chapter.

Step 4: classify the relationship

For each row, choose one relationship label.

  • Matches: both sources make the same claim.
  • Extends: the reading supplies detail behind a lecture point.
  • Applies: the lecture uses the reading's rule in a case.
  • Qualifies: one source adds a boundary or exception.
  • Contrasts: the sources use different explanations, scopes, or terms.
  • Unresolved: the connection is not supported by the available material.

Do not force every row into agreement. An unresolved label is more useful than a polished but invented synthesis.

A clearly labeled teaching example

This is a fictional teaching example, not a real course excerpt or recorded Notoo output.

Suppose a lecture slide says, “Feedback changes future performance,” and shows an arrow from attempt to feedback to new attempt. A textbook section distinguishes outcome feedback from process feedback. Your source bridge might say:

The combined note preserves the slide's structure, adds the reading's distinction, and leaves the missing course-specific detail as a question.

Step 5: compress only after verification

Once the table is accurate, write a short topic note in this order:

  1. Core claim: one or two sentences.
  2. How it works: the mechanism, reasoning, or procedure.
  3. Evidence or example: with slide and page labels.
  4. Boundary: exception, limitation, or competing view.
  5. Open question: anything still unresolved.
  6. Recall task: an explanation, diagram, comparison, or problem.

Compression before verification can hide contradictions. Verification before compression produces a shorter note you can trust.

Step 6: test the combined note

Cover the source columns and answer only from the recall prompt. Then reopen the slides and reading to check:

  • Did you preserve the course term?
  • Did you use the correct relationship?
  • Did you remember the boundary or exception?
  • Can you locate the supporting slide and page?

A source bridge is not finished when it looks organized. It is finished when it supports accurate recall and lets you trace an answer back to course material.

Repeat for each priority topic, then keep one list of questions for class, tutorials, or office hours.

Adapt the method for international study

Keep the official course term in the first column. Add a plain-English gloss only after the definition is checked. If a translation helps, place it in a separate field; do not replace the wording likely to appear in lectures or assessments.

When the lecturer and textbook use different terms for the same idea, record both and verify whether they are true synonyms. A translation tool or AI explanation can clarify language, but the course source decides the expected meaning.

Common mistakes

Pasting two summaries together

This creates duplication, not integration. Organize by topic and name the relationship.

Treating slide emphasis as complete evidence

A bold bullet may be important but still incomplete. Use the reading or lecture explanation to establish why it matters.

Letting the textbook overwrite the lecture

The assigned chapter may cover more material than the course assesses. Preserve lecturer emphasis and the stated learning objective.

Deleting conflicts

A different definition or scope is a study question. Label it and ask which version applies.

Losing source locations

Without slide and page references, later checking becomes slow and uncertain.
